Veteran Pitcher Stepping Away From Baseball to Help Wife Through Cancer Battle

Veteran major-league pitcher Chad Kuhl could help a team down the stretch this season, but he won't be an option for interested teams after announcing he wants to stay by his wife's side as she goes through treatments for breast cancer.

“While I’ve received offers to continue to play this season I have made the choice for my family to stay in the DC area for the time being and have Amanda continue to get the best care possible,” he continued. “I’ve decided to be with her through the course of chemo and radiation.

“This is just a pause for me and my family,” he added. “My desire to play and love for the game has never been stronger and I’m looking forward to the next time I step on a major league mound whenever that may be.”

Chad Kuhl went 0-4 this season for the Nationals with a 8.45 ERA. He has played seven years in the league with the Pirates, Rockies and Nationals.

He was designated for assignment by the Nationals at the end of June.

Lifetime, he's 31-45 with a 4.98 ERA. He won a career-high eight games for the Pirates back in 2017.

We certainly understand and respect Kuhl's decision and wish him and Amanda the best as they go through this journey together.

Amanda posted this on Instagram as well, which may indicate she's received good news:

“Also, in case anyone is interested, I scheduled my last batch of chemo appointments today. Last round is the week of Sept. 7. Count down to the bell has begun!”
