Viral Clip Shows Somebody Playing Fortnite on the Scoreboard at Fenway Park

The Boston Red Sox won't be taking the field at Fenway Park for another three months, but their home stadium is still getting some use in the offseason.

Jake Roy, a contributor for SB Nation's Over the Monster, posted a video on social media of somebody playing "Fortnite" on the main Fenway Park video board ion Thursday. Many fans joked about how inconvenient it would be to play the popular video game in that setting, while others noted that it is a favorite pastime of reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell – who is currently a free agent.

The Red Sox have improved their center field video board on multiple occasions, most recently doubling its size in 2022. In 2023, they replaced John Hancock with Mass Mutual as the presenting sponsor atop the 62-foot-by-16-foot scoreboard.

Fenway Park holds plenty of actual events over the winter, beyond brief gaming sessions.

The Fenway Bowl pitted Boston College against SMU on Dec. 28, for example. There is typically hockey played at the ballpark as well – the NHL's Winter Classic, the NCAA's Frozen Fenway or both – but neither is taking place in 2024.

The Red Sox open their season on the road against the Seattle Mariners on March 28. Following a 10-game road trip, the club will finally return to Boston for their home opener versus the Baltimore Orioles on April 9.

This will mark the Red Sox's 113th season in Fenway Park. Beyond being the oldest stadium in MLB, Fenway is also the fifth-oldest venue in all of American sports.
