The Toronto Blue Jays secured a playoff berth on Sunday following an 8-5 win against the Kansas City Royals. After the game, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. issued a warning to their division rivals New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays had taken control of the division following their 4-game sweep of the Yankees in Toronto in July. Since then, the Bronx Bombers have been trying to catch up to the Canadian side and topple them from the top.
After 6 successive wins, which included the sweep of division rivals, the Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays were one game away from the 90-win mark. They would then suffer a mini-slump in form.
Two back-to-back defeats against the Tampa Bay Rays was followed by a thumping loss on Friday. The Royals would put up 20 runs on the board with 27 hits and crushed the Blue Jays 20-1.
The AL East leaders would then drop the 2nd game of the series and lose 2-1 on Saturday. This turned out to be their 4th successive defeat and put them on the brink of getting swept by the Royals.
The offense of the Blue Jays finally got hot on Sunday. They stitched up 12 hits and scored 8 runs to win the game 8-5. This victory saw them become the first American League side to clinch a playoff berth.

Following the game, a celebratory Vladimir Guerrero Jr. expressed that the job was not done yet. In a warning to the Yankees, the first baseman claimed that they (Blue Jays) now want the division title.
The job is not finished. We want to win the division.

The Blue Jays currently lead the Yankees by 2 games. They also hold the tiebreaker against them with an 8-5 record. With just 6 games remaining, the Toronto-based outfit would be hoping to avoid any setback and clinch its first division crown since 2015.
The Toronto Blue Jays are the first American League team to clinch a spot in the playoffs this year. The AL East leaders are now hoping to clinch the title and get a bye straight to the American League Division Series (ALDS).
The Blue Jays currently occupy the best record in the AL at 90-66. With the Seattle Mariners leading the AL West by 3 games with an 87-69 record following a 3-game sweep of the Houston Astros, and the Detroit Tigers hanging on to the lead at the AL Central by 1 game with an 85-71 record, the Blue Jays will be hoping to keep their winning run going and get one of the 2 byes.
The two top-seeded teams in the playoffs will get a first-round bye from the Wild Card and appear straight in the ALDS. The Wild Card series has been the one that has broken the hearts of the Blue Jays in recent seasons.
The team has lost all 3 of their previous Wild Card series with a 0-2 score. They lost 2-0 to the Minnesota Twins in 2023, 2-0 to the Seattle Mariners in 2022 and 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020 and have not won a single game.
The last time the Blue Jays played in the Division Series was in 2016, when they swept the Texas Rangers 3-0 in a rematch of the 2015 ALDS. They went on to lose 4-1 against the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

The Blue Jays will now face their two division rivals, the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays, in their final homestand. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees, who still have a small chance to clinch the title depending on other results, take on the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.
