Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is taking home some hardware in front of the home crowd this evening. The Jays’ first baseman is set to receive the Tip O’Neill Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame for the 2024 season in a pre-game ceremony before Toronto takes on the Athletics.

The Tip O’Neill Award is an annual honour that is presented to the Canadian player who excels individually on the baseball field while also contributing to his or her team’s success.

Guerrero is eligible for the award because he was born in Montreal, Que. when his father was playing for the Expos, despite signing with the Jays through international free agency out of the Dominican Republic as a teenager. This is his second time winning the award, capturing the honour during his MVP-worthy 2021 campaign, and he was named a finalist last season alongside Cade Smith, Josh Naylor, and Tyler O’Neill.

Per Jeremy Diamond, the chair of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors:

“There were several outstanding candidates for the 2024 Tip O’Neill Award, but we are proud to recognize Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for his All-Star and Silver Slugger award-winning season with the Toronto Blue Jays… When you look at his overall numbers, he was not only the best Canadian-born hitter in 2024, but he was one of the elite players in all of Major League Baseball.”

In 2024, Guerrero amassed a 6.2 bWAR while suiting up in 159 games for the Blue Jays. He posted a .323/.396/.544 with a .940 OPS and added 30 home runs and 103 RBIs, all of which were team-leading amongst qualified players.

He earned his fourth All-Star nomination and ranked first among all Major League first basemen with his 5.4 fWAR, all the slash line metrics, BABIP (.342), and 165 wRC+. The Canadian finished sixth in AL MVP voting and earned his second Silver Slugger Award.

It will be an exciting night for Guerrero and the Jays fans, as the first 15,000 fans will also receive a City Connect Replica Hockey Jersey giveaway on top of the Tip O’Neill ceremony.
