Things got a bit heated on Tuesday at Coors Field during the game between the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies. After Rafael Devers hit a home run off Kyle Freeland in the first inning, he would exchange some words with him, which led to the benches being cleared and some punches being thrown.

Following a 0-2 count at the top of the first inning, Devers connected on an 83 mph sweeper and hit a 2-run home run into right field to give his team a 2-0 lead. The situation escalated when the Dominican international started to round off the bases after flipping his bat.

He and Freeland would engage in a verbal war. As the two of them continued to exchange words, the benches would get clear, and players from both teams would rush onto the field.

Devers’ teammate Willy Adames would go face-to-face with Freeland was involved in a heated confrontation with him. Matt Chapman would join him and shoved the pitcher as the others tried to control the situation.

Once the situation cooled down, the umpire’s crew would get together to discuss. Freeland, Adames and Chapman were subsequently ejected from the game for their part in this brawl. Meanwhile, Devers would finish rounding off the bases almost 10 minutes after he smashed the home run.

Rafael Devers plays 3B position for the first time in 2025 season

Rafael Devers finally got to play the 3rd base position on Tuesday. After Matt Chapman was tossed from the game due to his actions in the brawl, Devers would take over and play in the 3rd base position for the first time in the 2025 season.

There was huge drama regarding him and his position earlier this season. While he was at the Boston Red Sox, the team would sign Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman and make him their 3rd baseman and made Devers as their Designated Hitter (DH).

The 28-year-old would initially refuse to yield his position. However, he would later take up the DH role. The team would then urge him to take the 1st base position. Once again, Devers would decline that offer.

In June, after the Red Sox swept the Yankees, Devers was traded to the Giants. The 2-time Silver Slugger would express that he was ready to play any position his new team wants.

On Tuesday, he finally got the chance to play as the 3rd baseman again. He would flash Chapman’s glove from a familiar territory once again.

After the game, he admitted that he did not feeling anything unusual and was comfortable in this infield position.

I haven’t taken any grounders at third base but I felt comfortable. I think that both positions are similar, first and third. It felt really good, it has five Platinum Gloves in there.

Devers, who had a strong start to the game, did not finish it well, though. He struck out twice and finished the game going 1-for-5. His home run was his 15th homer in a Giants uniform. This sees him cross the 30-homer mark for the 4th season running as he already had 15 home runs with the Red Sox before.

The Giants ended up winning the game 7-4 and picked up their 9th win in their last 10 games. They will head into the action on Wednesday, hoping to complete the 3-game series sweep.
