Watch: Did Mets' Pete Alonso throw bat because Cubs' Adrian Sampson walked him?

Members of the first-place New York Mets are visibly frustrated heading into the halfway point of September.

The 89-54 Mets have dropped back-to-back home games to the 60-82 Chicago Cubs, have been outscored 9-3 across those contests, and will enter Wednesday's matchup between the clubs holding just a half-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.

In the first inning of Tuesday's clash held at Citi Field, Mets slugger Pete Alonso thought he had crushed a home run on a blast that was correctly ruled foul:

Cubs pitcher Adrian Sampson responded to that close call by walking Alonso, and the 27-year-old surprisingly whipped his bat to the ground in apparent anger before he began his journey toward first base.

Alonso and Sampson jawed back and forth before umpires calmed things down, and both players addressed the incident after the Cubs' 4-1 victory.

"I was just, like, 'Don’t do that,' Sampson said about Alonso's bat throw following the game, per Justin Terranova of the New York Post. "It doesn’t look good. It’s not part of our game. [The encounter] was a non-issue. I have a lot of respect for the guy.

"He’s a really great ballplayer. He does a lot of stuff on and off the field that I respect a lot. And we share the same agent. There’s no hard feelings. I just didn’t like to see that."

Meanwhile, Alonso made it clear his response had little to do with the fact that Sampson didn't give him another fat pitch to potentially hit out of the ballpark.

"I wasn’t upset that he didn’t throw the ball over the plate, I was frustrated the ball [in the corner] went foul," Alonso admitted. "It’s about putting runs on the board, and I was just frustrated at that."

Alonso connected on one in the bottom of the ninth, but it was a matter of "too little, too late" by that portion of the game:

Alonso and company will look to right the figurative ship against the Cubs on Wednesday evening.
