Watch: Minnesota Twins Infielder Kyle Farmer Hit by Pitch in the Face

A scary moment occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning in Wednesday's game at Target Field between the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox, as Twins infielder Kyle Farmer took a pitch in the face and was forced to exit the game.

White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito appeared to have lost the handle on his four-seam fastball, accidentally plunking Farmer in the face with a 92-mph pitch. Giolito looked distraught after hitting Farmer.

Farmer was able to walk off the field, as Willi Castro replaced him as a pinch runner on first base. The Twins told reporters that Farmer exited the game with a jaw injury.

Farmer will have surgery to reset his teeth and repair a laceration to his jaw, Star Tribune columnist LaVelle E. Neal III reports.

Despite losing Farmer, the Twins defeated the White Sox 3-1, and improved their record to 8-4 on the season. They now have a 1.5-game lead in first place of the American League Central, with the Cleveland Guardians in second, and the White Sox now in third, at 5-8. With the victory Wednesday, the Twins took home another series win.

Since splitting a four-game series with the Houston Astros to open the season, the White Sox are 3-6 over their last three series.

After failing to make the postseason in 2022, despite entering the season as heavy favorites to repeat as AL Central champions, the White Sox hired new manager Pedro Grifol. Grifol was previously the Kansas City Royals bench coach. Grifol's club is off to a slow start, and now has injuries to key starters Eloy Jimenez and Tim Anderson.
