The Philadelphia Phillies selected the flame throwing right handed pitcher Jose Pena with the 175th pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, adding a needed live arm to their bereft minor league system.
The 6'3" 18-year old has a blazing fastball reaching 97-97 miles per hour. By all accounts, Pena had a strong spring campaign that saw him shoot up draft boards:
Phillies going prep arm again in Jose Peña from Tampa. Grabbed more velocity this spring up to 96-97, consistent development over last year+, good spin metrics on breaker, strikes need to continue coming. #PGDraft

Pena couldn't contain his excitement at joining the Phillies organization. "I'm so happy with the way everything worked out. We are all celebrating here at the house," he told Sean Perks of the Tampa Bay Times. He confirmed he's be signing with the Phillies and embarking on his pro career.
As if getting drafted wasn't enough, Pena is also getting the full prospect profile treatment in the latest episode of The Whistle's "No Days Off" series where they offer a behind-the-scenes look at the big armed youngsters approach to the game.
