Watch Yankee Stadium’s lights go out mid-at-bat

Ivan Herrera was at bat in the first inning when all of the lights on the first-base side of Yankee Stadium went out. The Cardinals had a runner on first thanks to a JJ Wetherholdt walk, but the lights flipped the momentum. Will Warren struck out Herrera after falling down 3-1 in the count. St Louis did not score in the first inning.

The lights went out a second time during the inning, but have stayed on since the temporary blackout. This was all after a one-hour rain delay due to a shower blowing over the stadium. Once the weather gods and the lights cooperated, the Yankees and Cardinals were underway.

The Yankees’ offense has gone through a power outage in recent weeks, and the trade deadline did not bring in enough to satisfy fans. George Lombard Jr has injected some life into the fanbase, however, as he hit a homer in his MLB debut. The new starting shortstop made some solid defensive plays early in Wednesday’s game. He also dealt with one of the odder delays you can have in baseball.

The Yankees just returned from a solid road trip in Chicago for a huge home stand. After the Cardinals leave, they have a day off before hosting the Atlanta Braves. With the AL East race tightening up, these games are important. They need their offense to charge up soon, and they desperately need the lights to stay on.
