Watch: Yankees insider calls Juan Soto deal 'a move they have to make'

With all 30 Major League Baseball teams convening in Nashville this week for the annual Winter Meetings, New York Yankees fans hope embattled general manager Brian Cashman will find a way to bring San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto to the Bronx.

Following an incredibly disappointing 2023 season in which the Yankees had the league's second-worst batting average, fourth-worst on-base percentage and eleventh-most strikeouts, there's quite a bit of pressure on Cashman to make a big offseason offensive acquisition.

Soto certainly checks that box, and Jack Curry of the YES Network explained on Monday why he thinks the Yankees will get the deal done.

"We know discussions have been at an impasse because of a difference of opinion in what the Yankees should give up for Soto," Curry said on "Yankees Hot Stove."

"I think these conversations will gain more traction — the Yankees know this is a move they need to make. They need to fix what ailed them in 2022, and that was a historically bad offense."

Despite the stalled discussions, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Monday morning that the Yankees are still the favorite to land Soto.

Not only does he fit the bill as a classic power-hitting lefty who would fire missiles over the short porch in right field, but his .275 batting average in 2023 was better than every Yankee to don the pinstripes last season. Soto also played in all 162 games and in at least 150 in all but two seasons — one of which was his rookie campaign in 2018 when he didn't make his debut until late May.

For the Yankees, the saying "the best ability is availability" rings especially true, as the organization has been plagued with injuries in recent seasons.

The Yankees' World Series window is closing fast.

Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton are just a few of the key contributors for manager Aaron Boone who have already celebrated their 30th birthdays. Soto is still just 25 and has already won a championship — not to mention he improves the Yankees roster in many ways.

This is indeed a deal they have to make.
