What fell off Robinson Chirinos’ bat during Game 4 of the World Series?

Robinson Chirinos had another big game at the plate for the Houston Astros in the World Series and has come up huge as they looked to turn things around.

Chirinos homered in the Astros’ 4-1 Game 3 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday night. He also delivered a 2-run home run to make it 4-0 in Game 4 on Saturday and doubled in the game. But before the big hits, something a little odd happened.

Chirinos was batting with the bases loaded in the top of the first and grounded into an inning-ending double play. After his first swing, something flew off his bat. The Astros catcher grabbed it off the ground, looked at the end of his bat, and then stuffed the item into his back pocket.

The home plate umpire took a second to look at the bat and then let Chirinos continue.

Some fans thought something had come out of the end of Chirinos’ bat and even speculated he was using a corked bat.

Houston smacked 13 hits and scored eight runs in the win. They seemed to have a gameplan of hitting off-speed pitches against Patrick Corbin, which was a similar approach they had that led to success in the ALCS against Luis Severino.

The series is now tied 2-2. Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer will match up in Game 5 on Sunday.
