It’s been 40 years since the Tigers last won a World Series. It’s been over a decade since they were even in one.
So, yeah, this trade deadline matters a lot.
Detroit isn’t just a nice early-season story anymore. They reached 50 wins faster than any team in baseball and are holding their own near the top of the American League. With Tarik Skubal dealing and the offense holding steady, the Tigers suddenly look like a team with a real October path.
But if for that path to lead to a deep playoff run, it might come down to what happens over the next few weeks.
According to ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle, Detroit doesn’t need a blockbuster. What they need is roster balance. A contact-heavy shortstop like Isiah Kiner-Falefa would be an upgrade over what they’ve gotten from that position so far, both offensively and defensively. He also adds something this team lacks—speed.
Third base remains a soft spot.
Zach McKinstry is back from the injured list, but Jeff Passan and David Schoenfield both floated one familiar name: Eugenio Suarez. He’s slugging .569 with 25 homers and was originally signed by the Tigers in 2008. A reunion could give the lineup a boost. Suarez will be the most coveted third baseman on the trade market if the Arizona Diamondbacks decide to trade him.
And then there’s the bullpen. Schoenfield pointed out that despite early success, Detroit’s relievers rank just 25th in strikeout rate. One late-inning arm could make all the difference.
There will be options to bolster the backend of the bullpen. Kyle Finnegan (Nationals) offers affordable, late-inning stability with ground-ball stuff and closing experience. For a higher-impact move, Ryan Helsley (Cardinals) or Emmanuel Clase (Guardians) bring elite strikeout rates and postseason potential, though the cost will be steep. Shelby Miller (Diamondbacks) and Ryan Pressly (Astros) offer veteran depth if Detroit aims for flexibility over flash.
The Tigers can’t stand pat at the deadline with this opportunity in front of them.
