What These Top Prospects Bring to The Yankees

In the midst of an eight-game losing streak and what has been described as a “disaster of a season," the New York Yankees decided to go young, bringing up top prospects Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira from Triple-A to the big leagues in hopes of developing the future Yankee stars. 

Here is what we know about the newest Yankees and what they could bring to the table the rest of the year and beyond.

Peraza and Pereira have both been standouts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with the 22-year-old outfielder Pereira slashing .312 with eight home runs and 33 RBI since being promoted from Double-A and 23-year-old infielder Peraza hit 14 homers for 36 RBI on a .268 batting average.

Pereira brings a quality contact bat to the table during a season where the Yankees desperately need it, evidenced by the Bombers’ second-worst team batting average in baseball, only second to the Oakland Athletics. Pereira has also been an extra base-hit artist this season, logging 17 doubles and matching his career high heading into the final stretch of the year. If guys like Pereira can get on base and in scoring position for the star sluggers like Aaron Judge, things could turn offensively in New York.

Meanwhile, Peraza brings something a little different to the table. A similar player in style to New York Mets star Francisco Lindor, Peraza brings a steady bat and can reach base frequently but also has the power to take major league pitchers deep. On top of that, Peraza is a tremendous infielder who can improve the infield in a big way should he reach his potential.

Peraza brings a fair amount of experience as well as he made his debut last season for the pinstripes, making a start at shortstop in Game 2 of the ALCS.

General manager Brian Cashman, after his “disaster” statement, went on to say that everything will be up for evaluation at the end of the season in regards to roster moves and potential changes in the front office.

“I think we're all going to be evaluated, including myself,” Cashman said.

It is fair to say that the move up for two of the best prospects in the Yankee farm system along with the move to bump superstar prospect Jasson Dominguez was very intentional and that all three could be playing for a roster spot next season should they impress as New York hits desperation time with playoff chances decreasing by the at-bat.

It was a rough start for the two on Tuesday, combining for 0-for-7 out of the No. 7 and No. 8 spots, but bounced back with a hit each in their narrow 6-5 defeat over Washington. Peraza has also looked the part of a major league infielder lining up at third base and Pereira has held his own in left field for the Yankees.

It is safe to say this young duo will only improve from here and some MLB experience toward the end of the season is sure to help New York’s stars of tomorrow. Peraza, Pereira and Dominguez are sure to all get consideration for next year’s major league opening day roster with the organization set to hit the restart button and make a push for the World Series again.
