Where Are They Now? Boston Red Sox Top 10 Prospects From 2019

It’s been five years since 2019 and it’s time to take a look back and see where the Boston Red Sox Top 10 Prospects by MLB Pipeline ended up.

2019 Boston Red Sox Top 10 Prospects

1.) 1B – Michael Chavis

Chavis was drafted by the Red Sox with the 26^th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He spent three seasons with the Red Sox from 2019-2021 playing in 168 games hitting .234 with a .704 OPS; he had 19 doubles, four triples, 25 home runs, 83 RBI, and 74 runs scored. He would be traded to the Pirates in 2021 for Austin Davis, he spent time in the Washington Nationals system and most recently the Seattle Mariners where he currently is playing in Triple-A Tacoma.

2.) 1B – Triston Casas

Casas was drafted with the 26^th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Red Sox. He’s become the Red Sox future first baseman and he’s played in 181 games hitting .252 with a .844 OPS; he has 25 doubles, two triples, 35 home runs, 87 RBI, and 89 runs scored. He finished third in Rookie of the Year voting last year.

3.) 3B/1B – Bobby Dalbec

Dalbec was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Red Sox. He’s been up and down between Boston and Triple-A. With the Red Sox he has played in 316 games over five seasons hitting .225 with a .723 OPS; he has 37 doubles, seven triples, 46 home runs, 138 RBI, and 112 runs scored.

4.) LHP – Darwinzon Hernandez

Hernandez was signed as an International free agent by the Red Sox in 2013 and they had aspirations of him being their closer but that never worked out. He spent four seasons with the Red Sox making 91 appearances and one of those was a start going 3-4 with a 5.06 ERA, a 4.54 FIP, a 1.73 WHIP, and 133 strikeouts in 85.1 innings. He was purchased by the Orioles in January of 2023 but was released later in July. Now he is playing in Japan and in nine games he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.55 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts in nine innings.

5.) LHP – Jay Groome

Groome was drafted 12^th overall by the Red Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft. The highest level he reached for the Red Sox was Triple-A before he was traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Eric Hosmer, prospects, and cash. Since then, Groome has only stayed in Triple-A for the Padres.

6.) RHP – Tanner Houck

Houck was drafted by the Red Sox with the 24^th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. He is currently in the middle of a breakout season for the Red Sox in his fifth season. He made his debut on September 15, 2020, going five shutout innings giving up two hits; he walked three and struck out seven. In his career, he’s made 83 appearances with 50 of those coming as starts he is 18-24 with a 3.54 ERA, a 3.32 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, and 320 strikeouts in 310 innings.

7.) SS – Antoni Flores

Flores was signed as an International free agent. He never reached past High-A and was released in August of 2022. He ended his tenure playing in 159 minor league games hitting .226 with a .635 OPS; he had 21 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 59 RBI, and 66 runs scored.

8.) RHP – Bryan Mata

Mata was signed as an International free agent. He was expected to make his big league debut this season but a strained hamstring ended that. He is currently on a rehab assignment with the Red Sox rookie league team. In his time in the minors, he’s appeared in 98 games with 95 of those coming as starts going 29-26 with a 3.41 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 442 strikeouts in 427 innings.

9.) SS/2B – C.J. Chatham

Chatham was drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He reached as high as Triple-A in the system but was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in January of 2021 for a player to be named later, he never got past Triple-A with the Phillies and he is now in the Arizona Diamondbacks system.

10.) OF – Jarren Duran

Duran was drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Red Sox. He had his breakout season last year and has become a fan favorite for Red Sox fans for how he plays the game and his hustle. He’s played in 236 games hitting .259 with a .732 OPS; he has 62 doubles, 13 triples (six of which are from this season), 14 home runs, 83 RBI, 110 runs scored, and 42 stolen bases.

Honorable Mention

20.) RHP – Kutter Crawford

Crawford was drafted in the 16^th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Like Houck Crawford is having a breakout season in 2024 with a 2.24 ERA in nine starts. He has made 62 appearances with the Red Sox and 45 of those have come as starts he is 11-17 with a 4.24 ERA, a 3.80 FIP, a 1.21 WHIP, and 266 strikeouts in 261 innings.

24.) RHP – Brayan Bello

Bello was signed as an International free agent by the Red Sox and made his debut in July of 2022 going four innings giving up four runs on six hits; he walked three and struck out two. He’s made 47 appearances with 45 of those coming as starts he is 18-20 with a 4.21 ERA, a 4.15 FIP, a 1.40 WHIP, and 214 strikeouts in 246 innings. The Red Sox have signed him to a six-year, $55 million contract extension on March 7^th.
