The Cincinnati Reds made a surprising splash by acquiring third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates.
BREAKING: The Cincinnati Reds are acquiring third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. Hayes is among the best defensive players in baseball and has five years of club control beyond this season.

While Hayes isn't a blockbuster bat like Eugenio Suárez, he does bring elite defense, long-term control and much-needed stability to Cincinnati's infield.
Adding Hayes immediately fortifies the infield defense while unlocking Noelvi Marte's athleticism in the outfield. Cincinnati gets one of the best gloves in baseball at third base. No major leaguer has posted more Outs Above Average (73) over the past six seasons than Hayes.

Offensively, the question is more complicated. After a breakout debut in 2020, Hayes has struggled to replicate his early promise. His OPS has slipped into the .500s in 2024 and 2025, and his once-explosive max exit velocities have declined.
Still, the Reds may see a change in scenery as a spark. Hayes has held his own at Great American Ballpark, hitting .264/.304/.434 with four home runs in 112 career plate appearances.
Hayes is under contract through 2029, which includes a 2030 club option. His eight-year, $70 million contract gives the Reds cost control on a premium defender as they continue to shape their core.
For the Pirates, this marks the end of a long relationship. Hayes was drafted 32nd overall in 2015 and carried the franchise's hopes for a rebuild. For the Reds, though, this is a calculated bet: a long-term glove upgrade, immediate roster flexibility, and a potential offensive bounce-back at a hitter-friendly park.
If Hayes can stay healthy and even partially regain his form, the Reds may have found a quiet deadline steal, one that fans will hopefully appreciate more with time.
