White Sox claim catcher Jake Rogers off waivers

The Chicago White Sox have claimed catcher Jake Rogers off waivers. The 31-year-old was designated for assignment (DFA) by the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 11 to make room for catcher Adley Rutschman to be activated from the injured list.

In a corresponding move, the White Sox have DFA'd left-handed pitcher Joe Rock to make room for Rogers on the roster ahead of a pivotal series against the Detroit Tigers.

Rogers has been solid against left-handed pitchers this season, slashing .273/.346/.455 with an .801 OPS and a 123 wRC+. Rogers has spent a significant amount of his career with the Tigers, so his expertise should come in handy as the White Sox will face a red-hot Tigers lineup. Talk about perfect timing for the White Sox.

Rogers had a strong impact behind the plate for Tarik Skubal's Cy Young-winning season each of the last two years, and he could offer the same veteran guidance to the White Sox's young starters despite hitting only .183 at the plate this year.

Jake Rogers finds new home with White Sox

The veteran catcher has provided solid framing numbers across 2,858 defensive innings, which will help the White Sox's defense behind the dish.

The veteran is out of minor league options, so he'll head straight to Chicago's active roster, likely pushing Drew Romo back to Triple-A. Across 40 games with the Tigers, Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles this season, he owns a .617 OPS. That first-hand knowledge of the division-rival Tigers should only help the White Sox as they battle for the postseason.

Having also been traded to Boston in the same deal as Rutschman, Rogers' time with the Red Sox was limited to just three games, but he made the most of that brief time, going 3-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI and two walks, while adding a critical sacrifice fly during Boston's 13-inning win over the White Sox on Aug. 6.

For a White Sox team that has cycled through several catchers this season, Rogers could offer some stability the rest of the way.
