White Sox Faceplant in Homecoming as Diamondbacks Dish Out a Desert Beating

The Chicago White Sox finally won a road series, and everyone felt warm and fuzzy for about 24 hours. That ended promptly on Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks dropped a 10-0 anvil on their heads to open a three-game series at Rate Field.

Shane Smith lasted two innings. The big blow in the first came on a Josh Naylor two-run double. The knockout punch? A three-run bomb in the second inning by Pavin Smith. No relation, just pain.

The rookie starter gave up five earned runs on four hits and two walks over two innings. He struck out two and looked completely out of sorts.

Whatever momentum the South Siders built in Sunday's dramatic comeback win in Toronto was doused with ice water and left to dry in the June humidity.

Smith Shelled, Capra Called In

Things didn't improve after Smith's exit. Dan Altavilla came in and gave up back-to-back solo shots in the fourth, first to Ketel Marte and then Smith (yes, again). Wikelman Gonzalez joined the fun by allowing a two-out RBI single in the fifth to Gabriel Moreno. Or maybe it was Jose Herrera. At this point, who cares?

Tyler Gilbert delivered the only clean outing among five White Sox pitchers, tossing two scoreless innings.

By the ninth inning, shortstop Vinny Capra took the mound because nothing screams "fun bad" like your infielder pitching in a blowout. Capra gave up two runs but also struck out a batter.

Rodriguez Rebounds, Sox Offense Goes Missing

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez came in with a 5.93 ERA, but you wouldn't know it watching the Pale Hose flail around. Rodriguez scattered five hits and two walks over six shutout innings while striking out 10. Anthony DeSclafani mopped up the final three innings for the rare three-inning save

News and Notes

The White Sox offense, if you can call it that, went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and struck out 14 times. They walked four times and never had a runner reach third base.

Ryan Noda entered the game in the seventh after the home plate umpire ejected designated hitter Edgar Quero for arguing balls and strikes.

Shane Smith has now allowed 10 earned runs over his last two starts and is inching dangerously close to his career high in innings pitched. Rookie wall, meet face.

What's On Tap Next?

The White Sox haven't named a starter for Tuesday night's game, but expect to go with a bullpen game, bad news, especially after their actual starter lasted just six outs. Ryne Nelson will take the mound for Arizona, his seventh start of the season.

First pitch is at 6:40 PM CT and will air on CHSN.
