No such luck for the Chicago White Sox, who returned to the South Side after a three-game sweep at the hands of their crosstown rivals at Wrigley Field. The bad vibes didn’t stay in Wrigleyville, as the Sox dropped their fifth straight game and fell to an identical record as they had at this point in 2024.
They lost Monday’s series opener to the Seattle Mariners, 5–1, at Rate Field.
The White Sox offense produced just three hits through the first eight innings before finally scratching across a run in the ninth to avoid a shutout. It was little consolation.
Seattle starter Luis Castillo barely broke a sweat against one of the league’s weakest lineups. Castillo tossed seven shutout innings, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out five in what amounted to a light workout more than a test.
White Sox starter Davis Martin delivered a solid outing, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing two earned runs. He walked one and struck out three. One of Martin’s earned runs came after he exited with a runner on base in the eighth — a runner that reliever Cam Booser inherited and promptly allowed to score.
Booser entered with one out and a runner on. Things unraveled quickly. He walked J.P. Crawford, gave up a single to Mitch Garver, and then served up a grand slam to Julio Rodríguez, blowing the game open and giving Seattle a 5–0 lead.
Booser was charged with three earned runs in just a third of an inning.
The White Sox have now gone 4-for-25 with runners in scoring position over their last four games — not ideal for a team that struggles to string together hits on even a good day.
The White Sox will try to once again score some runs in Tuesday night’s contest. Seattle has not announced a starter, while the Sox will turn to right-hander Bryse Wilson, who is looking to bounce back from a rough outing against the Reds.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. CT and will air on CHSN.
