White Sox Option Red-Hot Catcher to Triple-A

A couple of weeks later, Quero was optioned again after the White Sox traded for Joey Bart. The 23-year-old backstop was hitting .194 with two home runs before the demotion but wound up back in the majors just a few days later after Bart landed on the injured list with a hand fracture.

Quero has been red-hot at the plate lately, batting .370 with an .833 OPS over his last eight games. He homered Tuesday and went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs during Thursday’s 9-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Overall, he has slashed .208/.279/.262 in 65 games this season.

Though Quero’s offensive production is well above Drew Romo’s .132/.214/.285 slash line, the White Sox chose to prioritize defense behind the plate. Quero is credited with -8 blocks above average this season while ranking toward the bottom of the league in both framing and pop time. Romo, on the other hand, has posted league-average marks in most defensive metrics.

Rogers, 31, is also regarded as a good defensive backstop, though he finds himself on his fourth team in three weeks. He long served as the personal catcher for former Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal but was designated for assignment on July 28, just a few days before his batterymate was moved at the trade deadline.

The veteran catcher was ultimately traded to the Baltimore Orioles, who were missing their top two backstops, before being flipped just four days later in the blockbuster deadline deal that sent Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox. He went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBIs in his short stint with the club before being bumped off the roster by a returning Rutschman.

In 125 plate appearances this season, Rogers has combined for a .183/.290/.327 slash line. He will bat ninth and start behind the plate against his former Tigers team Saturday.
