Former Dodgers favorite announces his retirement from MLB

A beloved former Los Angeles Dodgers player is saying, “That’s all folks!” Veteran left-handed pitcher Alex Wood announced in a post to his Instagram page on Friday that he is retiring from Major League Baseball. Wood stated that he was retiring with “immense gratitude” and called baseball his “first love” before issuing a lengthy set of thank-yous. You can read his full post here. Still only 34 years old, Wood pitched for five different MLB teams in his career. He is best remembered for his stints with the Dodgers from 2015-18 and again in 2020. Wood was a stud for the Dodgers in 2017, making the NL All-Star team and finishing in the top 10 in NL Cy Young voting after posting a 16-3 record with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. After being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2018, Wood then returned to the Dodgers for the 2020 MLB season and made four appearances for them in the playoffs as they went on to win the World Series. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native Wood spent last season with the then-Oakland Athletics but went just 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP over nine starts. His season then came to an early end because of shoulder surgery. Wood is now walking off the mound for good with 12 big-league seasons under his belt and over $62 million in career salary (plus his 2020 World Series ring). He had become known in recent years for outspoken takes over social media and might just have a new career ahead of him as a pundit.

Atlanta Dream Coach Has Strong Words for Brittney Griner on Sunday

The Atlanta Dream returned one of their most prized possessions, Brittney Griner, for a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. Griner had missed three straight games ahead of the team's matchup against Phoenix. She was working through a neck injury that kept her sidelined, joining Rhyne Howard as another Dream star to be dealt an unfortunate injury. After missing three straight games, Griner returned to the lineup to play her former team, helping Atlanta earn a 74-66 victory over the Mercury. Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko discussed the return of Griner after the game, mentioning that she had a great performance against one of the best teams in the WNBA. "I thought BG was great," Smesko said. "She was moving great. She looked really good out there. Defensively, she was excellent. She was controlling the point. I thought really good first game back for her." Griner finished the win over the Phoenix Mercury with two points, two rebounds and one assist. She capped off the night playing 13 minutes in her first game back with the Atlanta Dream. Griner is currently playing in her first season with the Dream, looking to help lead Atlanta to a WNBA title alongside stars Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray. While the Dream have dealt with several injuries and setbacks during the season, they have climbed up the league standings, holding the No. 3 slot in the entire WNBA. Throughout her first season with the Dream, Brittney Griner has posted 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.

Micah Parsons makes bold prediction about one incoming rookie

One incoming NFL rookie has already gotten the biggest stamp of approval from superstar linebacker Micah Parsons. New York Giants linebacker Abdul Carter only played six snaps Saturday during his team’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. But he sure made them count. Carter generated three quarterback pressures on his three pass rushes. He also held his own against four-time Pro Bowl left tackle Dion Dawkins in a couple of one-on-one matchups. The clip above caught the eye of Parsons. The Dallas Cowboys star predicted that Carter could surpass every other pass rusher in the NFL if he reaches his potential. “They asked me if Abdul could be a [sic] another great ! I told them he could be the best one!” Parsons wrote on X. Parsons may be considered biased, given that the Penn State alum shares an alma mater with Carter. However, many NFL scouts and front offices agree that Carter has that superstar gene similar to Parsons. The Giants picked Carter with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after a standout final season at Penn State. The former Nittany Lion tallied 12.0 sacks and 24 tackles for a loss over 16 games as a junior. Carter got into some controversy in April after he requested to use Lawrence Taylor’s retired No. 56 as his jersey number. Taylor refused and instead challenged Carter to make his own number famous. After later asking for another Giants legend’s number, Carter finally settled on a different set of digits.

Red Wings Announce Major Change for Their 100th Season and Fans Are Fired Up

The Red Wings have announced that they are bringing back their iconic 'Hockeytown' logo to center ice at Little Caesars Arena for their 100th year in the NHL. A somewhat familiar look is coming back to center ice at Little Caesars Arena, which has been the home of the Detroit Red Wings since 2017. A special fan polling has resulted in the announcement that the iconic former 'Hockeytown' logo from Joe Louis Arena, their former home, is coming back as part of a new special logo for the team's 100th year. Asia Gholston, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing for Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, released the following statement. The center ice fan vote, launched in partnership with Meijer, was a great way to get fans involved in Red Wings Centennial right from the start. Through an incredible response to this vote, fans have made it clear they're fired up for what's to come in celebrating 100 years of Hockeytown, which is only possible due to their unwavering support for the Winged Wheel. The Red Wings featured the 'Hockeytown' logo at Joe Louis Arena in 1996, which remained until the building's closure in 2017. The Red Wings then used the same logo in their 1st year at Little Caesars Arena, but since then have just utilized a large team logo. The Red Wings celebrate their 100th year in the NHL The Red Wings were founded in 1926, but are in the midst of the longest drought of postseason hockey in their history. Considering that they've now been around for 100 years, that postseason absence is a surprising statistic. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has started to feel some heat for having not been able to get the team to the postseason in each of his first 6 years on the job.
