White Sox Provide Encouraging Injury Update on Josh Harrison

Harrison exited early from Wednesday’s game vs. Seattle due to lower back stiffness. The 34-year-old played the majority of that contest before Danny Mendick replaced him at second base in the top of the eighth inning.

Seeking a second base solution post-lockout, the White Sox signed Harrison to a one-year deal on March 12. The two-time All-Star is off to a decent start this season, recording three hits, one walk, and one RBI in 19 plate appearances. He also has a spotless slate in the field on 16 defensive chances across 42.2 innings.

In Harrison’s brief absence, the White Sox have deployed Leury Garcia at the keystone position. The utility man committed two errors on Thursday, though wild wind conditions likely played a factor in one of those gaffes. Regardless, it’s evident the South Siders are missing Harrison.

Garcia will start at second base again tonight as the Chicago White Sox welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to town. But if La Russa’s claim about Josh Harrison’s availability holds true, he could be a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement option as the game wears on.
