White Sox Quiet the Rangers, Snap Skid Behind Burke’s Bounceback Start

The Chicago White Sox entered Friday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers having lost six of their last seven games, holding the same record they did at this point in 2024. But fortunately for the South Siders, the Rangers came in ice-cold, fresh off a three-game sweep by the Yankees and riding a four-game losing streak of their own.

The Sox made waves before the game with surprising roster moves. Then, for once, they let their play, not the chaos, do the talking in a 4-1 win to open the weekend set.

Right-hander Sean Burke, coming off a five-walk disaster at Wrigley Field, turned in one of his best performances of the season. The rookie held Texas to one run on three hits across six innings, walking three and striking out two.

The lone run Burke allowed came on an RBI double by former White Sox slugger Jake Burger in the fourth inning. Burger’s shot to the right-center gap nearly scored two, but Luis Robert Jr. played the carom off the wall perfectly and started a crisp relay with Lenyn Sosa and Edgar Quero.

The throw home was on the money, and Quero tagged out Josh Jung—a call that stood after a review.

White Sox Get to Texas Ace, Bullpen Locks It Down

Texas starter Tyler Mahle entered the night with a 1.47 ERA and had not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his first nine starts. The White Sox got to him for three runs in the third inning, on three hits and two walks.

Lenyn Sosa and Josh Rojas opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After walks to Mike Tauchman and Miguel Vargas pushed across the first run, Andrew Benintendi, fresh off the injured list, lifted a sacrifice fly to score Rojas. Luis Robert Jr. added a flare to center to make it 3-0.

Chicago added an insurance run in the sixth when Adolis García botched a ball in right field for a three-base error, allowing Robert Jr. to reach third. Two batters later, Joshua Palacios drove him in with a single to push the lead to 4-1.

For once, the struggling White Sox bullpen spared everyone the usual dramatics. Cam Booser, Jordan Leasure, and Steven Wilson each tossed a clean inning, with Wilson picking up the save.

News and Notes

  • The White Sox didn’t win their 16th game in 2024 until Game 64. This year? Game 51. It’s progress. Kinda.
  • Andrew Vaughn, recently optioned to Triple-A Charlotte in a surprise move, did not debut Friday. GM Chris Getz addressed the demotion pregame.
  • The win marked the White Sox’s first victory over Texas since June 2023. Yes, that’s a real stat.

What’s On Tap Next

The White Sox go for a rare series win Saturday afternoon with Jonathan Cannon on the mound. Cannon owns a 2.74 ERA in May and has looked sharp lately. Texas will counter with rookie Jack Leiter.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. CT and will air on CHSN.
