White Sox Roster Update: Benintendi Hits IL, Maton Returns to South Side

The Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday afternoon that outfielder Andrew Benintendi has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 5, with a left calf strain. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of infielder Nick Maton from Triple-A Charlotte.

Chicago outrighted Reliever Penn Murfee to the minor leagues, leaving the 40-man roster at 39. This is Benintendi’s second stint on the IL this season, after exiting Sunday’s comeback win over the Houston Astros early with calf tightness.

While the injury isn’t expected to sideline the veteran for long, it’s another setback for a team still trying to locate a consistent pulse at the plate.

A Familiar Face Returns

This marks Maton’s second stint with the big-league club in 2025. The left-handed hitter made the Opening Day roster after signing a minor league deal with a non-roster invite over the winter.

The White Sox designated him for assignment when the team acquired infielder Gage Workman from the Cubs in exchange for cash. Workman, naturally, is now on the injured list—because of course he is.

Maton showed flashes earlier this season, working walks (14.8% walk rate) and even knocking a couple of homers. He’ll likely see most of his playing time at designated hitter while the Sox try to patch together Benintendi’s production. And let’s be honest: patching is about all anyone can do with this offense right now.

What’s On Tap Next?

The White Sox are 16 games under .500 and looking to avoid a three-game skid against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The offense remains anemic, and losing one of their few competent left-handed bats in Benintendi doesn’t help matters.

The hope? Maybe Maton can spark something. Or at least foul off enough pitches to keep the lights on for another night.
