Texas was home to one of college baseball’s top teams during the 2025 season. Further proof is being revealed for Atlanta, where Longhorns continue to fly off the draft board. This time it’s catcher Rylan Galvan, going with the No. 376 overall pick in the 13th round to the Chicago White Sox.

Galvan actually went through this process last season as a draft-eligible sophomore. However, nobody wound up taking him, making the decision to return to Texas incredibly easy. The move paid off in a big way, as an opportunity to begin his professional career has been presented.

Of the 53 games Galvan played in this season, 50 of them were starts. His offensive numbers saw a nice jump, hitting a career-high .296. Fifteen balls left the yard as well, while knocking in 47 RBIs. Both Galvan’s slugging and on-base percentage got a nice boost, totalling for an OPS of 1.065. Major improvements from other years on campus, becoming one of Texas’ best weapons at the plate.

As he is a catcher, teams look at the defensive ability as well, if not more than other positions. Texas finished with the best team ERA in all of the SEC, coming in at 3.71. The Longhorns were one of four programs to be sub-4. Galvan behind the dish played a huge role in finding that success.

What MLB Draft analysts are saying about Rylan Galvan

MLB.com put together a scouting report on Galvan before the draft took place. On an 80-grade scale, the catcher came in as a 40-grade prospect. His arm is viewed as his best asset, while power is a close second. More than anything, teams scouting him will love the potential with the bat if a few things can come together.

“Galvan offers plus raw power that plays to all fields but comes with questions about how much he’ll be able to tap into it against pro pitching,” the scouting report said. “A right-handed hitter, he has significantly improved his swing decisions in 2025 but comes up empty too often on pitches in the strike zone. He can get too pull-happy and struggles to make contact against non-fastballs.”

Defensively, catcher is easily where Galvan will find himself moving forward. MLB.com pointed out some of the positive strides he made during the 2025 season, including his receiving and blocking. Leadership is also a word used, something backstops need when attempting to work alongside a Major League pitching rotation.
