White Sox sign Lance Lynn to two-year, $38 million contract extension

The Chicago White Sox have signed starting pitcher Lance Lynn to a two-year, $38 million contract extension, retaining one of the projected top MLB free agents this winter.

Lynn, acquired this offseason in a blockbuster trade, was set to hit the open market following the 2021 season. The 34-year-old will help anchor Chicago’s rotation at least through the 2023 season and profiles as one of its best starters.

The White Sox announced the official signing on Twitter, detailing the $38 million extension that includes a club option for the 2024 season.

Lynn, who represented Chicago in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game, has been one of the club’s brightest stars this season. Across 90.2 innings pitched, he holds a 1.99 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and has struck out 28.5 percent of batters faced.

With Lynn signed to a multi-year extension, the front office will likely turn its attention toward adding talent via trade. The MLB trade deadline is July 30 and Chicago is expected to be aggressive to address needs at second base and in the bullpen.
