Who should be on the Dodgers' trade deadline wishlist?

The MLB season is hitting its hottest point of the year, the trade deadline. The Los Angeles Dodgers are 56-40 (.583) heading into Saturday's game with the Texas Rangers and in first place in the NL West. With the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaching, they are looking for help to hold the lead on the division.

In L.A., the luxury tax is not a significant concern. Looking at the playoff scenarios, they are chasing the Braves and need a big boost to be able to go toe-to-toe with them in an eventual NLCS. Let's look at a few players on the Dodger's wishlist and what it will take to make those trades.

Tigers SP Eduardo Rodriguez

The Detroit Tigers are struggling in the worst division in baseball. Except for a handful of young players, their roster is for sale.

Detroit's Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to opt-out of his contract at the end of the season. With a 2.69 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 88 strikeouts, E-Rod is an adequate upgrade over Julio Urias, will be cheaper and will be more effective in the long run.

The Dodgers sending SS Joendry Vargas, RHP Landon Knack, and INF Devin Mann should motivate the Tigers and benefit both clubs.

Tigers SS Javier Baez

If the Dodgers feel that deal is a little too expensive for Rodriguez, they could ask for SS Javier Baez

Baez is also eligible to opt out of his contract at the end of this year. He is hitting .227/.264/.605 with seven HRs, 46 RBI and nine stolen bases. A change of scenery should restore the three-time MLBPAA Cubs Heart and Hustle Award winner to his All-Star-level production.

Even at his current production level, the Gold Glove shortstop is a significant upgrade over current Dodgers SS Chris Taylor and Miguel Rojas. Additionally, his World Series experience would be invaluable to the Dodgers this year.

Including Taylor or Rojas in the Rodriguez deal could entice the Tigers to dump Baez's contract.

Mets SP Max Scherzer

The Mets are looking to move some payroll as they are currently $147M over the luxury tax cap and 18 games behind the Braves in the NL East. Picking up some players that can push the Dodgers deep into the playoffs would be worth the cost.

Max Scherzer has a $43M player option left at the end of this year; renting him for the latter part of the year would be a nice boost to the Dodgers rotation that has a 4.40 team ERA.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 8-3 with 107 Ks in 94 innings and has World Series experience. The Mets should let the 38-year-old go pretty quickly to alleviate the salary, so an offer of prospect C/2B Yeiner Fernandez and the expiring contract of Noah Syndergaard would help the Mets out.

Guardians OF Steven Kwan

The Dodgers are ranked 13th in the NL in average from the left side of the plate (.245) and in stolen bases (57). They could use a switch or left-handed speedster to help with situational hitting in the playoffs.

The Cleveland Guardians could be willing to part with 25-year-old OF Steven Kwan for the right price. The price could be upcoming UFA SP Urias.

Kwan is slashing .277/.344./.713 with 15 stolen bases this year. If the Dodgers can get Rodriguez and Scherzer, then moving Urias wouldn't be a hesitation. The Guardians need to improve their rotation if they want to catch the Twins and win the AL Central.

Angels SP/DH Shohei Ohtani

No trade conversations in L.A. would be complete without a Shohei Ohtani trade option. The Dodgers and Ohtani make all the sense in the world and would elevate the Dodgers to one of the best teams in the NL. Pulling off an Ohtani trade should solidify an NLCS and probable World Series appearance.

Shohei would get to stay in L.A. and the Dodgers would get a significant enough international fanbase boost to offset any cost.

Acquiring a Cy Young contender and MVP favorite at the deadline would be epic.

Moving C Diego Cartaya is a given, the Dodgers have Will Smith as their catcher for the foreseeable future. Prospects Cartaya, IF Michael Busch, RHP Gavin Stone, rookie phenom Bobbie Miller plus one more top-20 prospect, would be ideal for both clubs and could outdo any other club's offers.
