Why Max Kepler Is Excited About Fresh Start With Phillies After Twins Exit

Max Kepler is turning heads this spring — and not just because he’s in a Phillies uniform for the first time in his career.

The longtime Twin has found new life in Philadelphia, where he’s healthy, hitting, and feeling right at home among a loud, veteran clubhouse full of personalities like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

After undergoing core surgery last October, Kepler entered camp with tempered expectations. But through 43 plate appearances this spring, he’s crushed those expectations, slashing .382/.512/.706 with three home runs.

His 112-mph laser off Pablo López and a 108.6-mph single later in the game showed that his swing changes with hitting coach Kevin Long — including an adjusted stance and simplified approach — are working.

Entering Friday, Kepler ranked 11th in hard-hit percentage among players with at least 30 spring PAs.

“I’m just comfortable here,” Kepler said. “The guys have been welcoming, and this clubhouse has an energizing vibe.”

For Twins fans, it’s strange to see Kepler — who spent over eight seasons in Minnesota, delivering elite defense and steady offense — donning red pinstripes.

He holds the Target Field record for home runs (81) and produced 18.6 WAR, per FanGraphs, during his time there. But with the Twins cutting payroll and turning to younger, cheaper outfield options, the club opted not to pursue a reunion this winter.

Kepler admits he was disappointed to leave under those circumstances but does not dwell on the past.

“I wish I had a proper goodbye,” Kepler added. “But this is a new chapter, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

If spring is any indication, the Phillies may have found one of the most underrated bounce-back bats of 2025 — and Kepler seems ready to run with the opportunity.
