Why the Brewers should trade for J.D. Martinez

The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and the Brewers currently hold a three-game lead in the NL Central. They have put themselves in a position to once again play in the postseason, but do they have enough to make it to the World Series?

The offense has been a bit inconsistent, and many believe Milwaukee will look to add a bat before the deadline. There were rumors that the Brewers were in the mix for Andrew Benintendi before he was traded to the Yankees. The Brewers still could look to add outfield help, and J.D. Martinez is a name to watch.

Why the Brewers Would Trade for J.D. Martinez

The Red Sox are in a weird spot right now when it comes to being buyers or sellers. The team has plenty of talent but has not been able to put it all together this year. Martinez was an All-Star in 2022 so he has value, and the Red Sox could get a decent return for a guy who will be a free agent next year. Martinez is slashing .293/.361/.466 this year and has played in 84 games, all as a DH. The Brewers could add a guy like Martinez and use him in a DH role.

The Brewers’ offense is going to need some sort of boost if the team wants to make a run in the postseason, and Martinez could end up being a good option for the rest of the year. They will also get to see him firsthand, as they start a three-game series in Boston Friday.

What Would It Cost the Brewers?

Considering Martinez only has the remainder of this season left on his contract, the Brewers might be able to get him without giving up too much. Benintendi was traded to the Yankees for three minor leaguers, but he is six years younger than Martinez. The Brewers possibly could end up getting Martinez for one or two minor league players.
