The 2025 MLB season is in full swing and there are a few teams who have emerged from the rest of the pack as legitimate contenders. In the American League, two of those teams are the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees.
Entering the season, the Tigers were expected to be a good team. However, they have taken that to another level and are one of the best teams in baseball.
Right now, Detroit holds a 50-31 record, which places them No. 1 in the AL. Behind them are the Houston Astros at 47-33 and the Yankees at 46-34.
A new statistic has been revealed that drops a prediction for the American League winner. That team is not New York, who many picked to win the AL at the beginning of the year.
OptaSTATS took to X to share an intriguing statistic. The last three times the Tigers had the best record in baseball midway through the season, they won the league.
"The Detroit @tigers are tied with the LA Dodgers for the best record in MLB after 81 games played. The last three times the Tigers had the best record in baseball at the halfway point of the season, they won the American League pennant (2006, 1984 and 1968)," the post read.

Detroit is no fluke team either. It was clear at the end of last season that the Tigers were turning a corner and becoming a potential contender.
That trend has simply continued into the 2025 campaign.
It will be interesting to see if Detroit is able to keep up their high level of play throughout the remainder of the season. Should the Tigers be able to do so, they should have a very good chance to make a postseason run to the World Series.
Next up for Detroit will be a Thursday afternoon home game against the Oakland Athletics.
