The Baltimore Orioles have reached a point in the 2025 season where they must take a step back, realize where they are, and begin planning for the future.
Now more than a third of the way into the campaign, the Orioles hold a 16-33 record and sit in last place in the American League East, 13 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Yankees.
It has not been ideal to this point, and it becomes more and more clear by the day that Baltimore will be a seller at the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
One piece could be on the move is veteran outfielder Cedric Mullins. Four years removed from his 30-30 season in 2021, the veteran is having another outstanding performance in 2025.
Entering Saturday, Mullins has batted .229/.323/.459 with 10 home runs, 31 RBI and a 125 OPS+ across 195 plate appearances in 47 games. Mullins is on pace for a career-high 33 home runs, and his seven stolen bases to this point have him on pace for 23, though he can turn on the speed at any time to try for his second career 30-30 year.
Of the nine impending free agents that the Orioles currently roster, Mullins sticks out above the rest as a major trade piece with what he has done so far this year.
"Center fielders worth a darn tend to be few and far between on the summer trade block, and there are always a few contenders who could use one," Kerry Miller wrote in a recent article for Bleacher Report. "As things currently stand, Mullins and his combination of 10 home runs, seven stolen bases and good enough range on defense would be a considerable upgrade over what the Phillies, Mets, Diamondbacks and others are bringing to the table."
Mullins would be a boon for nearly any contending team, and his veteran leadership would be hugely beneficial for teams with young lineups like the Arizona Diamondbacks.
