Will Clarke Schmidt impact Yankees’ playoff push soon?

New York Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt is making his way back from Tommy John surgery. All the way that the Yankees are vying for a playoff spot amid a really competitive American League East Division.

According to MLB.com, Schmidt’s possible return in August is coming close.

“Completed two of expected three up-downs in a live batting practice session on Aug. 4 before experiencing forearm cramping,” MLB.com. “Manager Aaron Boone said Aug. 5 that Schmidt is “probably good to go” after receiving treatment. Scheduled to play catch Aug. 6.”

Last July, Schmidt underwent Tommy John surgery, and shortly thereafter the Yankees re-signed him to a one-year $4.5 million deal.

New York is 64-51 and in second place in the American League East Division. They are 4.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, all the while the Boston Red Sox are coming up from behind. Thus, the division and very much the American League is up for grabs at a critical point late in the season.

As a result, New York needs all the help it can get.

Schmidt will come out of the bullpen and provide added depth.

Last year, Schmidt finished the season at 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA and 73 strikeouts before he was injured.

His return coincides with the return of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, Carlos Rodón, and Luis Gil. Fresh arms and bats are greatly needed at this time.

Schmidt was drafted by New York in 2017 and made his offical debut on September 4, 2020. He has an overall record of 23-24, 3.82 ERA, and 384 strikeouts to his name.
