Yankees $90 Million Veteran Rehab Paused for Hip Treatment

DJ LeMahieu received a cortisone shot in his hip on Tuesday, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. He said it was a move the Yankees consider proactive, but with the 36-year-old’s injury history, it’s hard not to view it as at least mildly concerning.

Boone told reporters before Tuesday night’s game in Baltimore that the veteran infielder had the injection earlier in the day. The plan is for LeMahieu to resume his rehab assignment by Thursday or Friday.

LeMahieu has been on the injured list since Opening Day with a right calf strain. He has previously dealt with hip injuries, and Boone said that LeMahieu “felt something coming on.”

Both the Yankees and LeMahieu regard the cortisone shot as a small step to keep his progress on track—not a sign of a major setback.

Still, it adds another red flag to a recovery that’s already taken longer than expected. With LeMahieu turning 37 this summer and coming off three injury-plagued seasons, even routine treatments start to feel like warning signs.

LeMahieu is in the fifth of a six-year, $90 million deal. The Yankees hope to slot him back in as their regular third baseman, a role that’s been filled in the interim by Oswaldo Cabrera. While Cabrera has done his job, the Yankees still view LeMahieu’s return as essential to solidifying the infield and bringing a much-needed right-handed bat back to the lineup.

That is if he can stay healthy.

For now, the hope is that the injection settles things down and LeMahieu can resume ramping up later this week.
