The New York Yankees received discouraging news regarding one of their top pitching prospects Friday after manager Aaron Boone said Carlos Lagrange is still undergoing additional medical testing for a shoulder injury.
Boone said the injury is "definitely going to cost him some time," with the 23-year-old right-hander recently landing on Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 7-day injured list. No official diagnosis or timetable for his return has been announced.
Lagrange had emerged as one of the Yankees' top internal pitching options after transitioning from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-June.
The move immediately produced results, making him a legitimate candidate to receive his first major league call-up later this season before the injury interrupted his momentum.

The Dominican Republic native signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2022 and is ranked as the organization's No. 4 prospect and No. 85 overall by MLB Pipeline. Although he has yet to make his major league debut, the 6-foot-7 right-hander has built a reputation around an upper-90s fastball that regularly reaches triple digits along with a power slider.
Across 18 minor league appearances this season, Lagrange owns a 1-4 record with a 4.55 ERA, 83 strikeouts and a 1.36 WHIP over 63 1/3 innings. After moving into a relief role in June, he posted a 1.98 ERA across 13 2/3 innings while limiting opponents to a .188 batting average and recording his first professional save.
The Yankees entered Friday with a 48-38 record, sitting second in the American League East as they continue to deal with multiple pitching injuries. Lagrange had been viewed as a potential in-house bullpen reinforcement during the second half.
With no timetable yet established, the Yankees will wait for the results of Lagrange's additional testing while hoping one of their highest-upside pitching prospects can return later this season.
