The New York Yankees are off to another strong start to the season under general manager and senior vice president of operations Brian Cashman, with the second-best record in the American League as of May 25, at 31-20.
But the Yankees have been in this position before, and Cashman knows all too well that a great regular season means nothing in the Bronx if you don't win in the playoffs.
For that reason, the Yankees will likely be buyers at the MLB trade deadline, and there was an update on which positions Cashman might pursue on May 25.
USA Today Sports MLB insider Bob Nightengale posted a lengthy column on Sunday morning, and there was a Yankees rumbling within it.
"The Yankees are aggressively searching for a right-handed bat, preferably a third baseman, while also looking for another starter," Nightengale reported, which certainly lines up with the Bombers' needs.
Among the Yankees' top 2025 injuries are starting pitchers Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and Marcus Stroman, as well as third base-eligible options like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Oswaldo Cabrera.
Now, not all of these injuries are expected to be long-term absences, but it still makes sense that Cashman might want to add some insurance in each area.
It'll be interesting to see who becomes available for the Yankees at either third base or starting pitcher throughout the summer.
Some early potential trade candidates at both positions include Nolan Arenado, Ryan McMahon, Tyler Anderson, Sandy Alcantara, Zack Littell, Andrew Heaney, Paul Blackburn and Germán Márquez, among others.
Former Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar has also been highlighted as a potential early trade candidate of the Athletics, and the ex-prospect would fit the righty need at the plate, while a lefty bat like McMahon would not.
