While everyone has noted the New York Yankees' bullpen as one of their strength's heading into the 2025 season, there was some concerning news on the eve of the first pitchers-and-catchers workout. Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that two pitchers expected to contribute from the pen this season come to spring training with concerning injuries.
Jake Cousins is dealing with a forearm strain, which could mean he begins the season on the injured list.
"So he is a couple weeks into a ‘no throw’ (period), which is probably a three to four week of no throwing. So seems like it's going well, and he's on track to start throwing, hopefully at some point next week or the following week, and then the build-up from there,” Boone said in his first press conference from spring training. “So that could leak into Opening Day, perhaps. But we'll have to see."
Cousins became one of Boone's relievers at the end of the regular season. After pitching to a 4.82 ERA in 2023 with the Milwaukee Brewers, Cousins wasted away in the Chicago White Sox minor leagues when the Yankees acquired him.
Working with Yankees' pitching coach Matt Blake, Cousins posted a 2.37 ERA in 37 appearances last season. He struck out 55 in 38 innings of work.
Clayton Beeter had a shoulder issue over the winter, pushing back his workouts.
"It looks like he's through it. He is already throwing sides, but he's probably behind and far, as far as the build-up goes," Boone said.
Beeter is one of the young arms the Yankees were excited about coming into this season. Although he made just three appearances for them last season, he posted a 2.08 ERA over 37 appearances in Double-A and Triple-A. Both Boone and Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman had mentioned him this offseason as a potential arm for the bullpen.
