While everyone in Yankee Stadium on Saturday seemed to breathe a sigh of relief after Anthony Volpe scared them, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was slightly more concerned.
He announced shortstop Anthony Volpe is undergoing further evaluation, including X-rays, after the game. Volpe was clearly feeling discomfort landing hard on his left shoulder during Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The incident occurred in the eighth inning when Volpe attempted a diving backhand stop on a ground ball by Christopher Morel, resulting in an infield single.
Immediately after the impact, Volpe was in obvious pain. He lay on the field, face down, holding his right shoulder for what seemed like several minutes. Boone and a trainer rushed onto the field and even the outfielders came in to see what happened. After several tests of the shoulder on the field, Volpe remained in the game.
After the game, catcher Austin Wells added to the concern when he told YES Network’s Meredith Marakovitz, “I am still hoping he’s OK.”
Volpe has been a consistent presence in the Yankees' lineup this season, contributing both offensively and defensively. His performance at shortstop has been a key component of the team's infield stability.
Through the first 32 games of the 2025 season, Anthony Volpe is batting .239 with five home runs and 19 RBIs, contributing to a .786 OPS. While his batting average remains modest, Volpe has shown increased power and improved plate discipline, as evidenced by a higher walk rate and a career-best slugging percentage.
