Yankees Announce Encouraging Clarke Schmidt Update

Schmidt last pitched in the big leagues last July after the righty underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career.

New York has been very cautious with Schmidt throughout his rehab, tossing only 5.2 innings across four rehab appearances to this point. If he does come back this season, it would be in a relief role for the Bronx Bombers.

The 30-year-old began his major league career primarily out of the bullpen, logging a 3.18 career ERA as a reliever since being called up by the Yankees during the 2020 season.

Boone also gave an update on another Yankees reliever on the mend. Left-hander Ryan Weathers, who’s been on the injured list for the last three weeks with a left forearm flexor strain, has reportedly progressed very well during his throwing progression and could potentially rejoin the Yankees during the final week of the regular season.

Weathers has strung together a solid year for the Yankees. In 25 starts this season, the 26-year-old has logged a 3.60 ERA with 143 strikeouts and a 1.22 WHIP across 137.1 innings pitched.

If the Yankees are able to get both Schmidt and Weathers healthy, they could play pivotal roles out of the bullpen. New York begins play Friday with the top Wild Card spot in the American League and are only three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
