Just days after being snubbed from an MLB best managers list, Aaron Boone got the only vote of confidence that truly matters. The New York Yankees have officially extended Boone's contract for two more years, keeping him at the helm through the 2027 season.
Both general manager Brian Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner had been vocal about their desire to extend Boone this spring, making the deal little surprise. Boone himself made it clear how he felt about staying in the Bronx:
"There is no place I would rather be."
The extension removes Boone's “lame duck" status, as he was previously entering 2025 Spring Training in the final year of his four-year deal. The Yankees had only picked up the option for that contract last fall after their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Since taking over as Yankees manager in 2018, Boone has led the team to a 603-429 record—a .584 winning percentage. That ranks him fourth among managers in the Live Ball Era, but only sixth in Yankees history.
Yet, despite consistent regular-season success, Boone has to deliver the Yankees and their fans a 28th World Series championship. While he finally guided the Yankees to an American League pennant in 2024, the franchise has gone 15 years without winning a World Series.
For Yankees fans, that remains a sore point. Many have criticized Boone for his bullpen management and in-game decisions, particularly in the playoffs.
And it's not just fans who have found fault with Boone.
Despite only trailing Los Angeles Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts (.611) in winning percentage among active managers, Boone failed to make MLB Network analyst Brian Kenney's list of the league's top 10 managers this week.
Kenney ranked Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch at No. 1, followed by Texas Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy, San Diego Padres' Mike Shildt, Boston Red Sox's Alex Cora, and Tampa Bay Rays' Kevin Cash in the top five. The rest of the list included Brian Snitker (Braves), Rob Thomson (Phillies), Dave Martinez (Nationals), Roberts (Dodgers), and Torey Lovullo (Diamondbacks).
Boone may have been overlooked and is much maligned by fans, but the Yankees brass have sent a clear message. Boone is their guy, at least for the next two years.
