Jazz Chisholm Jr. is poised to take a significant step in his return from an oblique injury. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that the dynamic infielder is scheduled for a complete workout on Tuesday, which will be a test. Boone told reporters before Monday night's game in Anaheim that if all goes well, Chisholm could begin a rehab assignment later this week, according to the New York Post's Greg Joyce.
Chisholm had already expressed his desire to be back early and skip the rehab assignment. However, the Yankees are cautious because oblique issues are notoriously tricky, often lingering longer than expected and requiring careful management.
Chisholm has been on the injured list since April 30. The rehab assignment would mark Chisholm’s first real test in live-game situations since the injury.
Boone has stressed patience throughout the process , underscoring the team’s priority on full recovery over a rushed comeback. With the Yankees having lost infielder Oswaldo Cabrera to a fractured ankle, having Chisholm back would be a big boost.
But Chisholm is a dynamic player who uses his power and speed, so he needs to be healthy to be effective.
According to Baseball Savant, Chisholm is hitting .213 with a .440 slugging percentage and a .317 wOBA through 125 plate appearances. His advanced metrics suggest potential for improvement, with an expected wOBA (xwOBA) of .338 and a barrel rate of 14.9%, indicating he's making quality contact. However, his strikeout rate is 31.2%, and his average exit velocity is 87.9 mph, slightly below league average.
A rehab assignment means that Chisholm's return would be on the clock. A position player must be activated on the major league roster 20 days from the start of a rehab assignment.
