Yerry De Los Santos spent Sunday afternoon wearing the pinstripes in his New York Yankees debut.
By Sunday evening, De Los Santos was planning a road trip … except, unlike his Baltimore-bound teammates, De Los Santos had his eyes set on Syracuse.
The Yankees announced they returned De Los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following their doubleheader sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. De Los Santos joined the big-league club Sunday as the 27th man.
De Los Santos pitched two scoreless innings in the Game 1 victory, working around three hits and striking out struggling slugger Anthony Santander.
Sunday marked De Los Santos’ first MLB appearance since August 2023, when he still pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old owns a 3.98 ERA over 52 career innings following Sunday’s game.
De Los Santos has been an efficient reliever for the RailRiders, posting a 1.08 ERA and a 9-3 K-BB ratio across 8.1 innings. Sunday proved he’s positioned himself to be one of the first relievers called if (or given the Yankees’ injury luck, when) another reliever goes down.
However, if De Los Santos does find himself on a big-league mound again, it’ll almost certainly be in a relief role. Although De Los Santos signed with the Pirates as a budding starter, he’s been a full-time reliever since 2017.
