The Yankees made a move Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after their pitching staff got lit up for a dozen runs in a loss to the Blue Jays.
Right-hander Clayton Beeter is back in the big leagues. He was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of Wednesday’s series finale. To clear space, the Yankees designated Geoff Hartlieb for assignment.
This is Beeter’s first call-up of the season, though he made three appearances last year.
The 25-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since September 2024, but he’s been sharp in Triple-A. In 23 innings with Scranton this year, he’s posted a 2.74 ERA with 35 strikeouts and a .189 opponent batting average. The Yankees have used him in a mix of relief and bulk outings, and his high-spin fastball and slider combo still play.
The timing is no surprise. The Yankees have lost 12 of their last 18 games heading into Wednesday night's game. After watching Toronto rack up 17 hits Tuesday, including seven off the bullpen, the Yankees needed a fresh arm.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted that his bullpen is stretched thin and he has to do a better job handling them.
Hartlieb, 30, had thrown just once since being called up last week. He delivered a clean inning in his lone outing, but with the 40-man roster tight and the bullpen overworked, someone had to go.
Whether Beeter sticks this time may depend on how much the Yankees need from him in mop-up or middle relief duty. But for now, he gives them a rested arm and a reason to try something different after one of their ugliest losses of the season.
