While most of the baseball world was focused on Juan Soto’s return to the Bronx, the New York Yankees made a significant roster move that may be more exciting for them. Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga was officially activated from the 15-day injured list after completing his rehab from 2024 Tommy John surgery.
Loaisiga’s return adds some immediate muscle to a bullpen that has been without a fireballer for the first quarter of the season.
When healthy, he’s been one of the Yankees’ most reliable arms. Since his debut in 2018, Loaisiga has pitched in 163 games with a 19-11 record, a 3.44 ERA, and 207 strikeouts over 219.2 innings. His 98-mph sinker and a career ground ball rate above 54 percent have made him a go-to option in late-inning spots. His best season came in 2021 when he posted a 2.17 ERA and looked like one of the most dominant setup men in the game.
Considering the trouble the Yankees have had with Devin Williams, Loaisiga helps bulks up the backend of the bullpen.
To make room for Loaisiga, the Yankees designated veteran left-hander Tyler Matzek for assignment. Matzek was brought in during the offseason to provide veteran depth from the left side.
The Yankees will now have a week to trade, release, or outright assign Matzek to the minors.
In an unrelated move, the Yankees also reinstated right-hander Clayton Beeter from the injured list but optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Beeter showed flashes earlier this season but will head back down to build up innings and stay ready if more help is needed.
With a tough stretch of games ahead, the return of a healthy and effective Loaisiga couldn’t come at a better time.
