The New York Yankees are being attacked on all fronts when it comes to the Juan Soto sweepstakes — and now their biggest rival has reportedly decided to enter the fold.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Boston Red Sox are "increasingly seen as a legitimate contender" for the 26-year-old slugger and are stepping up their efforts to lure Soto away from their longtime AL East nemesis.
Boston's pitch is said to be centered around Soto's fit in the city — both at Fenway Park and with the Dominican-born legends who have previously donned the Red Sox uniform.
Per Heyman: "Executives involved in the bidding, which is in its relatively early stages, say they expect some offers to eventually reach or exceed $600 million, which would easily be a record for present-day value. [Shohei Ohtani's heavily deferred $700 million Dodgers deal's worth is pegged at between $430 million to $470 million]."
Adding, "They could also sell Soto as the sole face of the franchise, which would be more difficult with the Yankees [because of Aaron Judge], Mets [Francisco Lindor], Dodgers [Ohtani, among others] and perhaps Blue Jays [though Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can be a free agent after next season]."
The Red Sox also have three of the MLB Pipeline's top 10 prospects, so the future is expected to be bright in Beantown (although they've only made the postseason one time since 2019).
Signing Soto to a massive contract could be the team's way of trying to make up for not committing long-term to former stars like Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. But the Yankees (and others) aren't expected to make it easy on them.
