Yankees Claim Impact Reliever off Waivers From Royals

Schreiber, 32, is in his eighth big league season and his third with Kansas City. The right-hander has been a key piece of the Royals’ bullpen, often pitching in high-leverage situations.

This season, Schreiber has performed well, posting a 3.65 ERA over 49.1 innings with 36 strikeouts and a 1.28 WHIP. Opponents are also batting .232 against him.

The veteran right-hander offers a five-pitch mix, predominantly throwing a four-seam fastball that averages 94 mph, along with a sweeper and sinker.

Schreiber will join a Yankees bullpen that has been a revolving door over the past month due to mounting injuries. The biggest blow came last week when high-leverage reliever Fernando Cruz went down with a partially torn UCL that will likely end his season.

While Schreiber can’t be expected to perform at the same level as Cruz, he brings plenty of experience that could prove valuable in the late innings.

MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players tomorrow, on Sept. 1, giving teams some much-needed flexibility for the final month. For the Yankees, that extra roster spot comes at a perfect time as they deal with several injuries down the stretch.
