Yankees decide to demote two notable players

The New York Yankees are shaking up the snow globe for the last two months of the regular season.

New York announced on Monday that they are demoting two noteworthy players — infielder Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Dominguez. Both players are being optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The decision was made so that the Yankees can accommodate two new players to their Major League roster. Shortstop phenom George Lombard Jr. is being called up by the Yankees (effectively taking Volpe’s spot), and former All-Star outfielder Heliot Ramos was acquired by the Yankees earlier in the day via trade with the San Francisco Giants (with Ramos effectively taking Dominguez’s spot).

Volpe, who was a Gold Glover as a rookie in 2023, has been on a downward trend ever since then. He hit a brutal .212 last season to go along with an AL-leading 19 errors at shortstop and had managed just one home run and 19 RBIs through 56 games this season (making for a career-low .646 OPS).

Dominguez, an ex-top prospect himself, had also failed to impress on the MLB roster. A switch hitter, Dominguez was batting .230 with six home runs and 14 RBIs through 52 games played for the Yankees this year.

Interestingly enough, both Volpe and Dominguez had started out the 2026 campaign in the minors. Now the two are headed back there again as the 63-50 Yankees phase in a new-look offense for the stretch run of the season.
