Yankees down Tigers to open four-game series
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres hit back-to-back homers, Luis Severino pitched seven strong innings and the visiting New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Monday.

Severino (4-8) gave up five hits and didn't issue a walk while striking out a season-high eight. Torres had two RBIs in the opener of a four-game series.

Akil Baddoo homered for Detroit's lone run. Starter Reese Olson (2-6) recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up one run and three hits.

The Yankees loaded the bases in the first on walks to DJ LeMahieu and Torres and an error by first baseman Spencer Torkelson on a grounder by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Olson then struck out Anthony Volpe to escape the jam.

Zach McKinstry had a two-out triple in the bottom of the third. Severino then retired Riley Greene on a groundout.

Olson issued a one-out walk to Judge in the fifth and Torres followed with a deep double to left center, allowing Judge to score from first. That ended Olson's night as he was replaced by Brendan White.

McKinstry's second triple of the game came with one out in the sixth. The Yankees brought the infield in for Greene, who hit into a fielder's choice as McKinstry was cut down at the plate. After Matt Vierling singled, Severino struck out Torkelson.

The Yankees increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh with back-to-back, two-out long balls off Beau Brieske. Judge lined his 29th homer of the season over the left field wall and Torres took advantage of a changeup with a 430-foot blast to left. He now has 21 homers.

Kerry Carpenter reached third in the bottom of the inning on a single, balk and groundout. Javier Baez grounded out, keeping Detroit off the board.

New York tacked on a run in the eighth off Jose Cisnero. Kiner-Falefa led off with an infield single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Oswaldo Cabrera's single.

Baddoo broke up the shutout bid in the ninth with his homer off Clay Holmes.
