The first-place New York Yankees (34-20) are cruising without infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique), who hasn't played since April 29. However, they could run away with the top seed in the AL if the 27-year-old performs as well as he did for them last season once he returns.
Chisholm slashed .273/.325/.500 with 11 homers and 23 RBI in 46 games for the Yankees after they acquired him from the Miami Marlins at the trade deadline. The 5-foot-11-inch, 184-pounder provided the team with much-needed athleticism and defensive versatility, as he filled in at third base despite having no experience there.
However, Chisholm played exclusively at second before going down this season, largely thanks to Gleyber Torres' departure. The sixth-year veteran has been replaced by Jorbit Vivas, Oswald Peraza, and DJ LeMahieu in the meantime.
Chisholm will take an important step in his rehab on Thursday, and he could change positions again when he gets back to the big leagues, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.
"Jazz Chisholm Jr. is scheduled to play in a Minor League rehab game tomorrow with [the Double-A] Somerset Patriots," he reported on Wednesday. "The Yankees are considering having him play third base when he returns."
The 2022 All-Star is slashing .181/.304/.410 with seven homers and 17 RBI across 30 games.

Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) leads the squad with 105 at-bats as a third baseman, but manager Aaron Boone said that he's unlikely to return this season after getting hurt on May 12, via SNY.
The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Chisholm as an international free agent in 2015 before dealing him to the Marlins at the 2019 trade deadline. The native Bahamian played just three postseason contests during his time in Miami before playing 14 last season alone in New York.
