Yankees Fan-Favorite Hints Career With Club Could Be Coming To An End

One New York Yankees fan favorite could end up playing elsewhere in 2024. 

Catcher Kyle Higashioka was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2008 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and eventually made his big league debut in 2017. Although he still is under team control in 2024, Higashioka addressed his future with the club Saturday and it didn't like he expected to be with the club much longer. 

"I don't really think about it too much," Higashioka said as transcribed by the New York Daily News Sports' Gary Phillips. "In this position, I can't, just because we're still playing. But I've been with this organization for half my life. So eventually, obviously, you either retire or get traded or whatever. It's not gonna last forever, but all the relationships that I've made here are incredible, especially with my teammates, the coaches, even some of the front office staff.

"I mean, I've known them forever. So whatever happens, happens. I'm just gonna try to go out there and do my best for the team. In the offseason, that's out of my control." 

Although Higashioka has been with the Yankees for a long time, it would make sense to make a move this offseason to free up playing time. New York called up No. 8 prospect Austin Wells and one-time All-Star Jose Trevino should be back with the club next year. Higashioka has been solid with New York but it looks like it his time with the organization could be coming to an end.
