The Yankees are in the final stages of roster decisions, and one of the biggest questions looming over their meetings today is the choice between Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren for the final rotation spot.
Carrasco, a veteran with a strong spring (2.45 ERA in 11 innings with 12 strikeouts), has a March 22 opt-out, meaning the Yankees could lose him if they don't add him to the roster. On the other hand, Warren has been just as impressive, posting a 2.87 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. While Warren may have more long-term upside, the Yankees could prioritize depth by sending him to Triple-A and keeping Carrasco as a proven arm in the rotation.
Another key decision revolves around the designated hitter role while Giancarlo Stanton remains sidelined.
Non-roster invitee Dom Smith has been a steady performer this spring, hitting .296 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. But Ben Rice has powered his way into the conversation with four home runs, showcasing his left-handed pop. His ability to play first base and catcher adds a layer of versatility that could appeal to the Yankees as they try to piece together their Opening Day roster.
The battle for third base remains unsettled as well.
Oswaldo Cabrera appears to be the frontrunner, but despite struggling at the plate (.200 average, one RBI in 30 at-bats), Oswald Peraza is out of minor-league options and has defensive versatility working in his favor. Meanwhile, Pablo Reyes has been the most productive hitter of the group, batting .400 with three RBIs, forcing the Yankees to consider whether his offensive contributions outweigh the experience of Cabrera and Peraza.
With just over a week left before Opening Day, Boone and the front office face many difficult choices. The injuries to Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu, and Stanton have only added to the uncertainty. As they finalize the group that will break camp, the Yankees must prioritize veteran experience, emerging young talent, or roster flexibility.
