New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton’s elbow injuries may be worse than initially thought.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday that Stanton is battling discomfort in both elbows. Boone said the ailment dates back to last season.
Boone acknowledged he wasn’t sure about Stanton’s status for Opening Day. Now, Yankees fans need to worry about their star slugger missing far more time.
Stanton discussed his health with Yankees reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, on Monday morning. According to Hoch, Stanton admitted he hadn’t swung a bat in nearly a month.
“So [if you ask] when did it feel good, when did it feel bad, there’s always a pain level there,” Stanton said. “You’ve got to deal with that. It’s just the wisest point to give time right now.”

“Look, tennis elbow or whatever they call it, [there are] tears in your tendon. So [if you ask] when did it feel good, when did it feel bad, there’s always a pain level there. You’ve…
Stanton went one step further, saying he has a “very high level of pain” in both elbows.
Boone compared Stanton’s elbow problems to tennis elbow. Stanton remarked that tennis elbow features “tears in your tendon,” which doesn’t bode well for the Yankees’ star slugger.
It remains unclear if Stanton will inevitably need elbow surgery. He’s already a full-time DH, meaning the Yankees won’t need to worry about replacing him in the outfield.
The update is especially concerning given Stanton’s injury history. He’s only played over 120 games once since 2019, often battling lower body injuries; he’s missed time the last two seasons with hamstring injuries.
Stanton reminded baseball fans last postseason how dangerous he still is when healthy. He earned ALCS MVP and smashed seven home runs in 14 playoff games.
Rest may only do so much. Stanton said he’ll need to play through the pain when he eventually returns.
“You’ve got to deal with that,” Stanton acknowledged. “It’s just the wisest point to give time right now.”
